Upgrading fuse boards to meet current wiring regulations BS:7671

FUSE BOARD UPGRADES | RCD UPGRADES

A consumer unit (Also known as Distribution board or fuse board)  is the single most important electrical appliance in your home.  In short, it remains the middle man between the electricity supply and your home’s electronic devices.  Older fuse boards use various types of fuses to help protect the circuit. However, modern consumer units help protect your electrical appliances from damage.  Most importantly, they minimise the chance of electrical shock to anyone in your home.

Above all, it is imperative that you keep your consumer unit in good working order for the safety of everyone in your home.

Do you need an Upgrade?

An up-to-date consumer unit is the best way to ensure the electrical appliances in your home remain safe for use.

If you are unsure whether your home needs a new consumer unit, answer the following questions…

  • Firstly, Is the wiring in your home over twenty years old?

  • Do you constantly need to replace fuse-wires when a fuse blows, rather than just pressing the reset switch?

  • Do you have an RCD protection device in your consumer unit?

If you answered YES, YES, NO, please give us a call, so we can take a look at your consumer unit.

We will not only check the age and condition the fuse board but, also the wiring.  This will give you all the information you need to know if you should consider an upgrade.

On average, an upgrade should take a day to carry out in a domestic property but larger properties and commercial buildings can vary.

Modern consumer units/fuse boards

To sum up, the consumer units that we install are tailored to individual needs.  This ensures it remains suitable for the electronic devices in your home.  All the consumer units that we install come with RCD protection, which measures the outgoing current against the incoming current.  If the RCD notices that the currents are different, it quickly cuts the power. This will prevent any potentially hazardous electric shocks.

You can find more information about consumer unit safety at the Electrical Safety First website.
