What is Emergency Lighting?

Emergency lighting is designed to illuminate in the event of a power cut or if a lighting fault/fire occurs and trips the lighting circuit. Without emergency lighting, this could lead to a sudden blackout and possible danger to occupants through physical danger or panic.

Most emergency lighting is required to operate fully automatically with a sufficiently high level of lighting to guide all occupants to evacuate the building safely. The majority of new builds have emergency lighting installed during construction, designed specifically to meet current regulations and any local authority guide requirements.

Correct Electrical Services can design and install emergency lighting to meet the BS5266-1, this relates to hotels, clubs, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and colleges, licensed premises, offices, museums, shops but also multi-storey dwellings.

Monthly Emergency Lighting Testing

Emergency lighting systems require a short functional test in accordance with BS EN 50172:2004 / BS 5266-8:2004 once a month.

The duration of the test needs to be sufficient to ensure that the luminaire operates correctly, whilst minimising any damage to the system components, e.g. Lamps, Battery.

Monthly testing on your system doesn’t need to be done all at the same time, the system can be tested in sections over a testing schedule, providing each emergency light is tested each calendar month.

Annual Emergency Lighting Testing

The annual emergency lighting test is a full rated duration test to ensure that the emergency lighting system is still functioning as it should and putting out acceptable levels of light.

The annual emergency lighting test is usually a 3-hour test, during that 3 hours all luminaires should stay lit and be giving off an acceptable amount of light.
